This is a neon I built at the start of the black lives matter movement. At the time, I was very aware that social media movements were widespread but mainly blackouts. I really wanted to create a neon that would stick around for years to come and portrait the initial burst of social media attention the movement received. Social media became a news channel during that time.

I made this piece after reading about methods to convert racists. Apparently the scientific research leans towards the idea of accepting their racism in the desire to understanding their reasoning for their beliefs. With that, you can formulate a plan to combat their racism and help them see that their issue is not with the colour of someone’s skin. The research suggested that calling them racists doesn’t fix their racism; it only antagonises them. This piece for me is about the approach, with the goal being to end racism. It’s clearly not been working as well as we would like it to. There must be other ways.
